Opposition MP Alan Suchánek announced on Monday he will return the White Crow award for people who have shown civil courage. A surgeon by profession, he received it last year after pointing out the overpriced procurement of a CT scanner in the Piešťany hospital where he was a member of the Supervisory board. In May, Prime Minister Robert Fico came with accusations that in 2012 Suchánek supported the purchase of a different overpriced CT.
After investigating the case, all members of the White Crow award committee resigned from their posts. "If the committee had examined the case in greater detail, Suchánek wouldn't have been honoured," explained committee member Zuzana Wienk. A few hours later Suchánek announced he would return the award, stating that at the time of the first tender for the CT scanner, he didn't have sufficient information about some technical details included in the documentation. "I was a part of the mistake, that's why I'm returning the award," he said.
