President Ivan Gašparovič gives UN General Assembly Speech

Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič gave a speech in New York, at the General Assembly of the United Nations on September 24. In the speech he focused mostly on the Syria situation, positioning himself against any military intervention. “When one thoroughly considers the potential impacts of military intervention in Syria, it is obvious that this conflict has only one good solution; a diplomatic one,” Said the President. He called on nations to find compromise solutions.

Gašparovič stressed that Slovakia condemns the use of chemical weapons and those who use them should be punished by the International Criminal Court. In his speech, the president also looked back at Slovakia’s 20 years of membership within the UN and presented Slovakia’s positions on different issues affecting the international community.
