As many as 780 police vehicle will be fitted with real-time computer systems, according to the Interior Ministry, which started the project in January. Touch screen devices will be added to selected vehicles over the next year, with the systems including navigation, document scanners, and cameras.
“It's a major anti-corruption measure, which also protects drivers and the police,” said Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák. The systems will also record traffic through built-in cameras, having the ability to constantly read the licence plates of nearby vehicles, and comparing them against the nationwide vehicle database. “Immediately, a car registered as stolen will raise an alarm and officers can intervene," explained the minister. The new systems will cost approximately ten thousand euro per vehicle, with the total cost approaching €40.5 million euro. The majority of this sum is being financed from EU funds.
