Miroslav Lajčák official Slovak candidate for UN top job

Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák (Smer-SD nominee) formally announced his candidacy for the post of UN secretary-general today (May 25), with his candidacy being subsequently approved by Cabinet. Lajčák's nomination will be sent to New York, where it will be discussed among the other Member States of the United Nations. "I will do everything possible so that Slovakia will not be ashamed of me", said Lajčák, after the government approved his official nomination for Slovakia, with the term of the current UN Director-General Ban Ki-moon expiring on December 31. As of January 2017, the UN will be headed for the next five years by the ninth UN secretary-general.
