Trainee lawyers still have to spend 5 years on apprenticeship

Trainee lawyers will not see the length of compulsory practice reduced from five years to three. On Tuesday the majority of MPs did not support the amendment to the Act on Advocacy which aimed at bringing Slovakia to the level of most EU countries. "24 of the 28 European Union Member States have the compulsory practice period of trainee lawyers shorter. There are no studies showing that the five-year legal traineeship enhances the quality of lawyers", argue the OĽaNO and NOVA opposition parties which proposed the amendment.
