On the final day of the World Ice Hockey championships, which ended in Russia on Sunday, the International Ice Hockey Federation introduced its seven newest additions to the IIHF Hall of Fame. One of them was former Slovak player Peter Bondra, who represented Slovakia on seven occasions in the international competition. He became a national legend after scoring the biggest goal in the country's international history. With 100 seconds remaining in the 2002 World Championship gold medal game, Bondra scored with a shot from the left circle to lift Slovakia to a 4-3 win over Russia. It was the country's first gold medal in the international competition. Equally impressive was his NHL career, where he scored 503 goals and led the Washington Capitals to its only Stanley Cup Final appearance.
