107 asylum seekers currently accomodated in Gabčíkovo

Currently 107 Syrians, including children, who have applied for asylum in Austria are staying temporarily in the Slovak village of Gabčíkovo. They are being accomodated there following an agreement signed last year by Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák and his Austrian counterpart Johanna Mikl-Leitner, according to which Slovakia agreed to accept up to 500 asylum seekers from Austria on a temporary basis at any one time. Slovakia provides the applicants with food and accommodation. Austria pays the asylum seekers' transport costs and provides them with some pocket money. A total of 1,200 people have so far been accomodated in Gabčíkovo. Despite the worries from locals expressed in a failed referendum last August, no incidents involving the asylum seekers have been reported in the village.
