The liberalisation of the visa regime was Ankara's condition to the March agreement between Turkey and the EU which aimed at stopping the mass influx of migrants to Europe. However the visa liberalisation process is based on a number of criteria which Turkey has not managed to fulfil all yet, stated Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák. He reacted thusly to the Wednesday decision of the European Commission to loosen the visa regime for Turkish citizens for short, 90-day stays in the Schengen area.
