Number of goats bred in Slovakia grew in 2015

While the number of farm animals has been falling in general, it's quite different with goats, TASR learnt from Slovak Agriculture and Food Chamber spokeswoman Jana Holéciová on Saturday. According to the Statistics Office, there were 36,300 goats bred in Slovakia in November last year, of which 26,900 were goat-mothers. Last year Slovakia produced around 15 million litres of goat milk, or less than 3 litres per person, which is according to the Chamber rather low. The same goes for meat. "Goat-kids are frequently produced for meat, but the overall consumption is hardly measurable, as on average we only buy 15 grams of goat meat per capita per year," added Holéciová. In the past the figures were much higher, with goats being regarded as "cows of the poor".
