Parliament voids Citizenship Act motion; dual citizenship still impossible

On Thursday, Parliament rejected an SaS-proposed amendment to the State Citizenship Act which would have allowed Slovaks to keep their passports if they became citizens of another country. Previously, the only way someone could lose their Slovak citizenship was at their own request, however the legislation was changed in 2010 under the first cabinet of Robert Fico in response to the Hungarian government's move to grant Hungarian citizenship to ethnic Hungarians living in neighbouring countries. Nevertheless, the SaS bill on Thursday had little chance of success in Parliament without votes from the governing Coalition. The co-governing Most-Hid party, which had been fiercely against the 2010 change, appeared suddenly unfazed by the new SaS initiative to restore things to how they were, even declining to take part in the vote. SaS's bill failed to pass, eventually receiving only 27 votes in the House. Since its introduction in 2010, the bill has seen 1,330 people lose their Slovak citizenship.
