According to data released by the Prison and Court Guard (ZVJS) service, out of the 8567 criminals convicted and sent to Slovak prisons in 2015, 158 have university educations. Conversely, 188 new inmates were illiterate; being unable to read or write. The majority of prisoners, however (3283), have basic educations. This was reported to TASR by Adrián Baláž, Director at the Director General's Office for the Prison and Court Guard. Following those with basic educations, the second largest group of prisoners convicted in 2015 were those with secondary education (3066). The total number of those currently in prison with incomplete primary education now reaches 18,700.
