There will be fewer Slovak strawberries, apricots and grapes on shelves in stores, as these fruits have been devastated by extreme cold nights this year. For example, apples from affected areas will have russeting on their skin as a consequence of low temperatures. Therefore, Fruit Growers Association chairman Marián Varga is concerned about further losses, as such, slightly altered fruit will be less attractive for consumers, writes the Sme daily. Wine growers from southern Slovakia were largely hit by this year's frosts, as well. Some of them, chiefly the small ones, have even lost their entire crop for this reason.
