The bold plan for raising speed limits on Slovak highways is no longer an option, Hospodárske Noviny daily reports on Wednesday. While last year policemen were considering the speed limit of 150 kilometres at least on some highway stretches, this idea has failed and the Transport Ministry no longer considers it viable. However, the fact that the issue is not being addressed by the ministry does not mean that the Opposition would not take it on. "We definitely support increasing the maximum speed limit on sections with low accident rate. Raising the speed limit in night hours is worth considering, too," said legislator for the Opposition Freedom and Solidarity Party Miroslav Ivan.
