Former US secretary of state Madeleine Albright was one of the main guests at the GLOBSEC 2016 international forum in Bratislava. In her speech she said that the USA must not forget about its international responsibility and therefore it must continue to be involved in the process of tackling issues of today's globalised world, not alone but rather in cooperation with allies. As for the current situation in Europe, Albright voiced her concern over the rise of xenophobia and nationalism, even though she conceded that a similar trend is also discernible in the US. Albright, born in Prague, served as the US secretary of state in 1997-2001 in the second administration of the Democratic president Bill Clinton. At GLOBSEC 2016 she received the so-called Czech and Slovak Transatlantic Award in recognition of her active contributions to the democratisation and building of freedom and stability in Central Europe.
