Slovak lawyer and activist Zuzana Čaputová was nominated for the Goldman Environmental Prize - for her fight against a toxic waste dump in the western Slovak town of Pezinok as well as her many years of legal work in the field of environmental protection. The dumping of waste in Pezinok aroused great resentment among local people and resonated in the media for several years. The campaign came to a head in 2013, when the Slovak Supreme Court ruled that the newly proposed landfill was illegal. Besides spearheading a successful campaign, Čaputová also became the face of the local citizens' initiative. She will receive the prestigious environmentalist award on Monday evening in San Francisco.
