Lawmakers ultimately failed in their attempted to overthrow Prime Minister Robert Fico following an attempted vote of no confidence in parliament this afternoon. This special meeting of parliament was convened by opposition MPs who believe the government's intended purchase of 49% of the gas company SPP is occurring under suspicious circumstances.
Robert Fico’s cabinet however argues that transaction has been arranged in order for the government to keep gas prices under control. A majority of 82 MPs voted in support of the Prime Minister, dwarfing the 59 who voted against. With the ruling centre-left Smer-SD party holding a majority in parliament, the chance of Fico receiving a no confidence vote was always extremely unlikely.
