The prestigious magazine National Geographic Traveller listed Spiš Castle as among the top 11 castles to visit. The castle, which is located in the Eastern Slovak region of Prešov, is one of the most visited monuments. It is one of the largest castles in the world, and as the National Geographic informs, "it is the largest of all central European fortresses." Spiš Castle was built in the 11th and 12th century and served its owners and inhabitants until the late 18th century when it was destroyed by fire. However its Romanesque and Gothic architecture has remained remarkably intact. In 1993 UNESCO listed Spiš Castle on the World Heritage List. It is open for the public from late March until late November every day.
