Potential agreement on new government, but nothing certain yet

President Andrej Kiska has granted the mandate to form a new government to Robert Fico, the leader of SMER-SD, which won the most support in Saturday's elections. The incumbent Prime Minister has until Friday, March 18, to form a new government. Fico admitted that there are not many options for forming a government, but he wants to try. The basic prerequisite for creating a stable government in Slovakia is the cooperation between Smer-SD and the Slovak National Party (SNS), Fico stated after meeting SNS chief Andrej Danko. After the meeting, Danko pointed out that there's a real possibility that no functioning government will be set up due to the election results. Prime Minister Fico also invited to the Governmental Office the chairmen of the Most-Hid and Sieť parties but they declined the invitation.
