By the end of August 130 people have applied for asylum in Slovakia. Only 6 got it, none of them from Syria although 7 Syrians have been declared protected persons, a temporary status that allows them to stay in Slovakia for a year. Last year there were 331 applicants and only 14 got asylum, most of them Afghans. Is Slovakia not attractive to asylum seekers because of its lower standard of living and lack of specific migrant communities as top politicians argue or its migration and integration policies are so restrictive that basically they lower the chance of developing those communities? Cultural anthropologist Martina Sekulová and ethnologist Miroslava Hlinčíková have tried to find an answer in a compelling study released last week. Anca Dragu reports.
