Bankruptcies in Slovakia Saw 16% Y-o-y Rise in 1Q26

In the first quarter of this year, 80 firms went bankrupt, amounting to a 16-percent year-on-year increase compared with the first quarter of 2025, when 69 companies failed. The data comes from credit registry administrator CRIF — Slovak Credit Bureau.

"It is still too early to estimate developments for 2026. The number of declared bankruptcies is fluctuating at a similar level, and we have not yet recorded any significant spikes. However, both the global and domestic economies are being shaken by severe crises. For several weeks now, we have been closely monitoring the military conflict in Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region, and we are feeling its impact in higher prices of oil, petrol and other goods. Many companies are signalling existential problems, and only time will show whether they survive," said CRIF chief analyst Jana Markova.

In March this year, 25 firms entered bankruptcy, including 24 limited liability companies and one simple joint-stock company (j.s.a.). Month-on-month, this represents a slight decline, as there were 27 bankruptcies in February and 28 in January.
