Slovakia weighs targeted energy aid, but long-term concerns persist

Slovakia’s Economy Minister Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) has yet to decide how the ministry will subsidise high energy prices next year. She admitted on Sunday that unspent EU funds—potentially up to €1 billion—could be used for targeted support for households.

The funds, drawn from unused EU allocations, may also go to energy-intensive companies. Eligibility will likely depend on household income, size, and past energy use. The scheme is expected to begin in January 2025, though it’s still unclear whether aid will come via bill reductions or energy vouchers.

The Council for Budget Responsibility supports targeted aid but argues that using EU funds this way is inefficient. Experts also warn that overreliance on subsidies discourages savings and long-term solutions. Opposition MP Jozef Hajko (KDH) called for investing in home insulation and energy efficiency instead.
