The Slovak National Party (SNS) will propose exempting small businesses and freelancers with an annual turnover of up to €100,000 from the recently introduced transaction tax, party spokeswoman Zuzana Škopcová confirmed. Larger companies would remain subject to the levy.
SNS argues the tax is harmful in the current economic climate, citing rising costs and administrative burdens for small entrepreneurs.
President Peter Pellegrini echoed the criticism at the Vizio Energo conference in Bratislava, calling for the tax to be scrapped entirely. “It makes no economic sense,” he said, questioning the logic behind taxing basic transfers like salaries or tax refunds. Pellegrini suggested replacing the transaction tax with more progressive or targeted forms of taxation.
The transaction tax has been in effect since April 1.
