Slovakia's trade balance with agricultural commodities fell to minus EUR 2.4 billion. Year-on-year, it increased by more than EUR 400 million, which is a record result for at least ten years. Last year, 1 300 lorries loaded with foodstuffs arrived here every day. This, too, shows why the spread of foot-and-mouth disease can be a disaster for the Slovak agri-sector.
In recent years, a thousand trucks have become a symbol of the decline of the Slovak agri-food industry. It is on them that farmers document Slovakia's dependence on food imports from abroad.
According to the euractive portal, if Slovakia closed all its borders, the shops would be short of food from a thousand trucks.
