Food inflation reached 2.4% in December

Food inflation in December last year was 2.4 percent, down from 6.3 percent in December 2023, according to Agriculture Minister Richard Takac (Smer-SD).

"In previous periods, inflation reached double digits. In 2022 food inflation was approaching 30 percent," said Takac.

He added that food prices decreased by 2.4 percent in December compared to November 2024, with the most significant month-on-month price drops in foodstuffs such as milk, eggs, cheese, and meat. Overall, inflation for the past year stood at 2.8 percent.

Takac specified that last December, he personally checked food prices in a retail chain, purchasing basic groceries for €75. At the beginning of January, the same purchase cost him €70, and by January 31, it was down to €63.35.

According to the opposition, members of which held a press conference in front of the Ministry of agriculture, food prices in Slovakia have not decreased even after the reduction of the value-added tax (VAT) rate.

Opposition MP Julius Jakab (Slovakia, Za ludi, KU) claims that during the term of the current government, food prices in Slovakia increased the most among all European countries.  He added that Minister Takac underestimates voters who feel in their wallets how the government of Robert Fico (Smer-SD) has cheated them. It promised them cheaper food and now they go to shop food, for example, in Poland, where it is cheaper by tens of percent.
