Hotels, guest houses and other accommodation facilities in Slovakia have struggled with an extreme drop in demand caused by the coronavirus outbreak for the second consecutive month, reporting a mere 7 percent of last year's number of guests for the month of May, the Statistics Office reported on Wednesday.
As few as 38,900 persons were accommodated in Slovak facilities in May with a slump in the number of guests reaching 93 percent year-on-year. For comparison, these facilities hosted 553,000 guests in May 2019 and 473,000 guests in May 2018.
Guests spent a total of 146,700 nights in accommodation facilities in May 2020, which is 89.9 percent less than a year ago. Although the number of guests in Slovak accommodation facilities swelled almost 6 times as compared with the previous month of April, this amounted to a mere 7 percent of last year's May figure.
Most of the clientele at accommodation facilities was domestic (94 percent). As few as 2,300 foreigners were accommodated in Slovak facilities in May, as compared to 224,700 foreigners reported for May 2019. The numbers for May have significantly impacted the figures for the first five months of 2020. A total of 1.1 million visitors were accommodated in Slovak facilities between January and May, down almost 50 percent from the same period of last year. Of this, almost 743,000 were Slovaks and 386,000 foreigners.
