On January 1st the new law on welfare benefits came into force amidst controversy. It introduces a compulsory requirement that receivers of benefits must work for the village or town they live in for 32 hours per month in order to get the money.
The Slovak President and the country’s Ombudswoman have complained that such a measure is in fact forced labour, which is banned by several international conventions Slovakia has signed. Even more, it is in conflict with the Slovak Constitution too. Anca Dragu reports.
