On Saturday the inhabitants of five of Slovakia’s self-governing regions chose their heads, or so called župans, in a second round of voting which featured the two candidates who collected the most votes in the first round, but failed to cross the 50% threshold.
The turnout was even lower than two weeks ago; on average 17% with the voters in the region of Banská Bystrica being the most active with a quarter of them casting the ballots and causing the biggest surprise: the leader of a far right movement, Marian Kotleba is the new head of this region. He defeated the incumbent, Vladimir Maňka, the candidate of the ruling social-democratic Smer party and supported by the coalition of six other parties.
