A report on financial literacy in Slovak schools presented by the Education Minister last week concluded that primary and secondary school teachers should spend more time talking about finance with their pupils.
The State School Inspectorate found that the subject was included on the curricula of about 77 percent of primary schools last year, almost triple the figure of the previous on but these numbers do not say anything about the actual quality of the teaching. In fact banks and insurance companies keep on complaining that Slovaks are not doing too well as informed consumers of financial products. Robert Hanák, an economist and psychologist in one person, working for Institute for Experimental psychology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences has been studying how people make decisions, including those concerning their money. Anca Dragu asked him to what extent Slovaks are different than others in this respect.
