SUMMER READING WITH RSI Pt 4: A Fee from Britain

The series of summer excerpts from Slovak literature in translation continues with the fourth story from The Book of Bratislava, published by Comma Press. Today, it’s Rudolf Sloboda and his story “A Fee from Britain.”

Rudolf Sloboda was a significant Slovak author of the second half of the 20th century, known for his narrative skill, sharp observations, and frank storytelling. Having lived in the village of Devínska Nová Ves all his life, he knew the city and its ups and downs particularly well. The story of his journey to collect his fee from Britain was selected for The Book of Bratislava by its co-editor Radoslav Passia, a senior researcher and literary scholar at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Co-editor Julia Sherwood adds that it was translated by David Short, a long-term teacher of Slovak in the UK and a veteran translator.
