Ji.hlava festival puts Slovakia’s public media reforms in the spotlight

The 30th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival in the Czech town of Jihlava will host a special screening of Retuning (Preladenie), a film by Slovak director Sára Prokopová, on Monday as part of a debate on public service media.

“We planned this debate even before the events of the last few days. We wanted to create a space to discuss what public service media should ideally look like in the 21st century, as well as how they might be funded. The current situation only confirms just how necessary such a discussion is,” said Marek Hovorka, director of the Ji.hlava festival.

Retuning documents the politically driven restructuring of Slovakia’s public broadcaster following the adoption of the STVR Act in 2024. The changes included the abolition of licence fees, the dissolution of the existing RTVS broadcaster and the establishment of a new public broadcaster, STVR, as well as personnel changes.

The Slovak documentary will also be screened at the 30th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival on Saturday, 31 October.
