61st Bratislava Music Festival Celebrates Slovak Opera Stars
The Bratislava Music Festival opened with a concert on Wednesday, 23 September. Running until 11 October, the 61st edition brings four international symphony orchestras and a wide range of soloists to the Slovak capital.
The festival will honour the legendary Slovak tenor Peter Dvorský, as well as composer, theorist and university professor Vladimír Godár. Audiences can hear performances by leading ensembles and soloists, including the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and the Cleveland Orchestra.

Two and a half weeks of concerts will also include an opera in concert. This year, Bellini’s The Capulets and the Montagues will be performed as a tribute to the celebrated Slovak-born opera singer Edita Gruberová, who would have turned 80 in December.
International Theatre Comes to Nitra for Divadelná Nitra Festival
The international theatre festival Divadelná Nitra opened in the western Slovak town of Nitra, which has a long theatrical tradition. This year marks the festival’s 35th edition, taking place from 25 to 29 September 2026.
Since its beginnings, the festival has introduced Slovak audiences to leading names in contemporary international theatre and dance. Recognised by established European theatre institutions and embassies, and attended by respected figures from the European performing arts scene, the festival has built a strong international reputation.
This year, English-speaking audiences can see seven performances with English subtitles. They include Macbeth by the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre in Kyiv, Ukraine; cerebrum fēlix by Angle_92 from Bratislava; My Struggle. A Man in Love by Theatre Na zábradlí from Prague; Come, You’ll Feel Better. I Promise. by 4 + 4 Days in Motion, also from the Czech capital; Ota by the Jozef Gregor Tajovský Theatre in Zvolen; Aria for the Poisoner by Black Hole of Europe; and Roar, Scream and Dirt by the host ensemble of the Andrej Bagar Theatre in Nitra.
Young International Designers Take Centre Stage at Bratislava Exhibition
The Slovak Visual Arts Union, the Jozef Vydra School of Applied Arts and the ŠUPKA civic association are behind JUNIOR DESIGN FEST 2026, an international design competition and exhibition for students of secondary art schools. The awards ceremony took place on 24 September 2026. The exhibition of participating projects has been curated by Maroš Schmidt, Director of the Slovak Design Centre, and runs at the UMELKA Gallery in BratislavaUMELKA until 11 October 2026.
Hawaiian-Based Slovak Author Presents Books and Film Tribute
On 29 September, Slovak author Vladimír Rosenfeld, who lives in Hawaii, will be a special guest at the Slovak premiere of Life or Film, a documentary about the acclaimed Slovak film director Dušan Hanák. Rosenfeld became known for his role in Hanák’s feature-film debut, 322, which was voted the Slovak film of the 20th century.
The documentary Life or Film will premiere at Lumière Cinema in Bratislava. Vladimír Rosenfeld will then continue his tour, presenting his new book for children, as well as a new collection of poems by his late wife, Oľga Urminská.

Fjúžn Festival Brings Cultures Together in Slovakia
Slovakia’s largest multicultural and multigenre festival, fjúžn, will conclude its two-week programme on 30 September. The festival brings together people of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds through music, theatre, discussions, exhibitions and community activities.
Inviting you to the weekend programme and the festival’s closing event is Veronika Fishbone Vlčková, director of the Milan Šimečka Foundation, which organises the fjúžn festival focusing on migration and the lives of foreigners in Slovakia.

Novotvar Celebrates Contemporary Slovak and International Writing
Novotvar is an international literary festival held annually in Bratislava. The name is also a Slovak word for a newly formed expression, or neologism. The 2026 edition of the festival runs from 30 September to 3 October. It showcases contemporary prose and poetry through author readings, international discussions, workshops, concerts and live art performances. Inviting you to the festival is Slovak author and one of its organisers, Mária Modrovich.
