Cinematik’s ambition is to open every edition with a world premiere of a new Slovak film. This year, that ambition became reality with General Golian, a historical epic directed by Juraj Štepka, which had its exclusive world premiere at the festival in September 2026.
Cinematik also presented Slovak premieres of films that had already made their mark internationally this year. Audiences were among the first in Slovakia to see Lover, Not a Fighter, winner of the prestigious Proxima Award for formally innovative films at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Also on the programme was If Pigeons Turned to Gold, winner of the 2026 Berlinale Documentary Award. The Czech-Slovak co-production has been selected as the Czech Republic’s entry for the Oscars.
