Art Takes Flight in Košice's Botanical Garden
Krídla motívov (Wings of Motifs) is the playful title of a new exhibition by internationally acclaimed Slovak artist Erik Sikora, better known as Džumelec. The title is a pun on the Slovak words motív (motive) and motýľ (butterfly), echoing the exhibition's dialogue with the live butterflies that hatch at this time of year in the Botanical Garden in Košice. Curated by Zuzana Janečková, the exhibition features a series of Sikora's watercolours displayed throughout the garden. Open until 15 September, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy both contemporary art and the delicate beauty of butterfly wings in one setting.
Wire, Wit and Tradition in Bratislava
Wire art meets wit at Bratislava's Primate's Palace, where the Gallery of Wire (Galéria drôtu) presents the 12th annual exhibition celebrating the craftsmanship of Slovak and Czech tinkers. Under the title (V)tipy, the collection of playful wire sculptures is presenting traditional techniques with humour and imagination. The show runs until 28 August.
Big names, Small village, Outstanding photography
Photography takes centre stage in the village of Šumiac during the Šumiac Photo Festival, organised by local enthusiasts from the Horehronie region. From 31 July to 2 August, the festival offers a 24-hour photo marathon, workshops and an evening dance party led by the traditional folk band Pokošovci. Among this year's highlights are exhibitions by British photographer Barry Lewis, acclaimed Czech documentary photographer Dana Kyndrová, and one of Slovakia's best-known photographers, Miro Švolík, whose work has helped shape Central European photography over the past several decades. On Saturday, Lewis and Kyndrová will also lead masterclasses alongside Czech photographer Pavel Nasadil. Set against the rich folklore traditions of Šumiac, the festival is free to attend.
When Statues Spring to Life in Spišská Nová Ves
From 31 July to 2 August, the eastern Slovak town of Spišská Nová Ves hosts the 10th Living Statues Festival (Živé sochy). The international street arts festival transforms the historic medieval town into the country's largest open-air gallery of living statues. The programme also includes concerts, theatre performances and appearances by well-known Slovak personalities, bringing the streets to life throughout the weekend.
