For Slovak literature, an English translation is often only the first step towards international recognition. To reach a wider audience, translated books also need to be reviewed in respected literary and cultural journals abroad.
The same is true for the arts in Slovakia. Reviews in leading cultural journals are crucial for gaining recognition. But many of Slovakia's leading arts and culture magazines have been hit by severe funding cuts since the current government changed the legislation governing the Slovak Arts Council, giving nominees of the governing coalition effective control over its board.
As a result, long-established literary and cultural journals lost much of their public funding, while grants were awarded to publications linked to the 19th-century national institution Matica slovenská or to a web portal that media experts have described as a source of disinformation, among others.
In response, leading Slovak journals, including Kapitál, ArtTalk, Fraktál, and many others, joined forces to create a common platform under the name PUČ. At the 2026 Bratislava literary festival BRaK, their editors-in-chief came together for a public discussion about the future of independent cultural journalism in Slovakia.
