Greenland Takes Centre Stage at Europe’s Largest Literary Festival
Authors' Reading month, one of Central Europe's biggest international literary festivals, begins on 1 July in Czechia, Slovakia and Ukraine.
This year's guest country is Greenland.
Until 3 August, audiences in Bratislava, Trenčín and Prešov will have the opportunity to meet international authors alongside leading Slovak writers through a series of public readings and discussions.
Among the Greenlandic guests are Jessie Kleemann, Nuka Alice Lund and Jens Peter Olsen, while Slovak literature will be represented by writers including Ivana Gibová, Pavel Bakajsa, Jana Bodnárová and Tomáš Straka.
Cyril and Methodius Lead Celebrations in Nitra
From 3 to 5 July, the city of Nitra will host the Nitra, Dear Nitra – Pribina and Saints Cyril and Methodius Celebrations.
The event marks two major anniversaries: 1,155 years since the first written mention of Nitra and 1,163 years since the arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia.
The programme combines spiritual, historical and cultural events. Highlights include the traditional National Pilgrimage in Svätopluk Square, the historical festival Pribina's Nitrava, expert conferences, theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts, literary discussions and the Nitra Fair, showcasing traditional crafts and regional artisans.
The celebrations also form part of the Cyril and Methodius Route, one of the Council of Europe's certified Cultural Routes.
Step Back into the First Republic at Bratislava’s Vintage Picnic
Pack a blanket and picnic basket and head to Janko Kráľ Park in Bratislava on 4 July for the annual Period Picnic.
Visitors are encouraged to dress in the style of the First Czechoslovak Republic, whether with a hat, gloves, elegant dress or vintage accessories.
The programme includes traditional crafts, games such as chess and cornhole, creative workshops, artisan stalls and local food producers.
Admission is free, and the event is fully accessible.
Vietnam Day Brings Food, Fashion and Music to Trnava
On 5 July, Trnava's Amphitheatre will host the fourth Vietnam Day festival, celebrating Vietnamese culture and the Vietnamese community in Slovakia. The programme features concerts, workshops, discussions, sports activities and a fashion show of the traditional Áo dài.
Visitors can also enjoy Vietnamese cuisine prepared by restaurants from across Slovakia.
Admission is free.
The Cure Opens Pohoda’s 30th Birthday Celebration
The 30th edition of Pohoda, Slovakia's largest multi-genre music festival, begins on 8 July at Trenčín Airport.
The festival opens with a special extra day headlined by The Cure, who have chosen Slovak musician, rapper and punk artist Fvck_kvlt as their opening act.
Performing a solo piano version of his music production including award-winning album Mŕtva revolúcia, Denis Bango—better known as Fvck kvlt—will launch four days of music featuring international stars including Gorillaz, IDLES and The Prodigy, celebrating three decades of Slovakia's best-known summer festival.
