Slovak Animated Films by Female Directors Being Presented in Brasil

The "Women of Czechoslovak Cinema" film series kicked off on Friday (June 5) in the Brazilian city of São Paulo. Until June 14, it will showcase the work of women in Czech and Slovak cinema.

This is the second edition of the event, which aims to present Czech and Slovak cinema in two culturally significant cities in Brazil, with an emphasis on joint Czechoslovak film production from past decades.

The selection of Slovak films focuses on female filmmakers who created short animated films. Slovakia is thus represented at the festival by the “first lady of animated film,” Jaroslava Havettová. At the Filmoteca Brasileira in São Paulo, eight of Havettová’s short films will be screened, ranging from the early works of her career in the 1960s to films from her exceptionally prolific period in the 1980s. The festival will also feature short films by other Slovak female animated film directors—Zlatica Vejchodská, Jana Blechová, Dagmar Bučanová, and Helena Slavíková-Rabarová.
