During his visit to Slovakia in 2021, Pope Francis celebrated one of the main masses at the Basilica in Šaštín. Because it was open to the public, the service took place outdoors, right in front of the famous pilgrimage site. The organisers kept things simple but beautiful—decorating the stage mainly with wildflowers and a plain table. One striking detail near the cross was a painting of St Joseph by the Slovak artist Dorota Sadovská.
A year later, in December 2022, then Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová presented Pope Francis with another of Sadovská’s works—a tondo painting of St Francis.
And if you’d like to see her work in person, you can do so in Vienna until 20 May, where it’s currently on display in a small gallery.
