From Shortwave to Streaming: A Shared Century of Czech and Slovak Broadcasting

In 2026, Slovak Radio marks 100 years of broadcasting in former Czechoslovakia—90 of them including foreign-language services that helped present the country to the world. While Radio Prague celebrates 90 years, Radio Slovakia International (RSI) marks 33 years as an independent voice from Bratislava.

International broadcasting began in 1936 amid rising tensions in Europe, when Czechoslovakia launched foreign-language radio to counter propaganda and stay connected with audiences abroad. That mission—offering reliable, fact-based insight—continues today.

After the peaceful split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Slovakia built its own international service from scratch. Despite modest beginnings, RSI grew into a multilingual broadcaster serving global audiences and connecting Slovaks abroad with their homeland.

Now, a century after those first broadcasts, Czech and Slovak international radio remains a vital tool of public diplomacy—evolving from shortwave to digital platforms while continuing to tell their stories to the world.
