EC Awards European Heritage Label to Trenčín Castle

The European Commission has awarded the prestigious European Heritage Label to 13 sites across the European Union, including Trenčín Castle, as part of the transnational initiative Places of Peace.

Places of Peace brings together historical sites across Europe associated with the signing of peace treaties and key moments of European reconciliation. The initiative connects locations in Portugal, Spain, France, Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Slovakia, highlighting their shared legacy of peacebuilding, dialogue, and historical memory.

In 1335, Trenčín Castle hosted a diplomatic meeting of representatives from the Czech, Polish, and Hungarian kingdoms. “The agreed peace arrangements in Central Europe were confirmed later that same year by the Visegrád Peace Treaty,” explained Tomáš Michalík, a lawyer at the Trenčín Museum in Trenčín, providing historical context. He added that the agreement signed at Trenčín Castle confirmed the annexation of Silesia to the Czech Kingdom and included the renunciation of Czech claims to the Polish throne.
