“It says a lot that English translations of Slovak classics are being published in the Czech capital, not in Slovakia.” That’s how Peter Darovec opened a discussion with representatives of Charles University’s Karolinum Press and Slovak translator Julia Sherwood. At the end of 2025, they introduced four books so far released in the Modern Slovak Classics series. Just before their public event, I sat down with Julia Sherwood, Martin Janeček, and Michael Stein from the publishing house to talk about why so-called ‘small nations’ still need to make their voices heard internationally.
