An eco-friendly way to enjoy books is to visit your local library. They’re still here, providing a public service for everyone—and many have been doing so for a century.
The Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav Library in Prešov was founded in 1925 thanks to the Act on Municipal and County Libraries passed by the parliament of the First Czechoslovak Republic. According to the Association of Slovak Librarians and Libraries, the law from 1919 was actually ground-breaking worldwide—it was the first to legally require every municipality in the new country to have a library. It made waves abroad and later inspired library legislation internationally.
With e-books becoming more common in the 21st century, some people wonder what the future of libraries will look like. But Iveta Hurná, director of the Prešov county library of Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav, is confident that libraries aren’t going anywhere. Marking the institution’s centenary, English-speaking visitors added to her confidence as well.
