In September 2021, Pope Francis made his first—and only—visit to Slovakia. Despite strict COVID-19 restrictions, thousands of Slovaks traveled across the country for a chance to see the beloved pontiff. Among them were filmmakers Stanislav Piatrik and Mária Piatriková, who documented the historic visit through powerful footage and interviews with notable Slovaks. Their work culminated in the new documentary Návšteva (The Visit).
In this episode, we sit down with the directors to discuss the significance of Pope Francis’s visit and their experimental approach to storytelling.
