National heritage institution Matica Slovenská has been playing a key role in protecting our national identity for many years, President Peter Pellegrini has posted on a social network to mark the anniversary of the institution's founding.
The principles on which Matica Slovenská was founded show that the path to the economic and social prosperity of a nation leads through culture, education and morality, stated Pellegrini.
The head of state praised the fact that, during his working trips, he's met people who want to continue the given mission.
Matica Slovenska was founded in Turčiansky Svätý Martin on August 4, 1863. Its founding was the culmination of efforts of generations of Slovaks to establish a nationwide association that would unite Slovaks across social and religious borders. This significant historical event is commemorated every year on August 4, the Memorial Day of Matica Slovenská. A respective law was adopted by MPs of the Slovak Parliament in October 1993.
