Tomáš Baršváry of the daily Štandard has won the Grand Prix at Slovak Press Photo 2025 for his image of Pope Leo XIV, taken shortly after the new pope’s election.
The photo is part of a nine-picture series titled From One Day to the Next, at the Centre. The international jury praised its global relevance and symbolic weight, calling it a powerful moment of unity and reconciliation.
Baršváry said the photo was completely unplanned — he was attending mass in Rome when the new pope unexpectedly appeared near where he was sitting.
A record 205 photographers entered this year’s competition from V4 countries and Ukraine. An exhibition of the winning and finalist entries opens at Hviezdoslav Square on September 19 and runs until October 19.
