Culture Tips, Week of April 21

English-friendly “Week of Slovak film”

The annual festival of Slovak film production, entitled “The Week of Slovak Film”, will open on Tuesday, April 22, with the feature “The Dormant Account”, directed by Miloslav Luther, who was awarded for his outstanding contribution to Slovak audiovisual legacy by the Slovak Film Academy at the 2024 “Sun in the net” national film awards. The screening will be English-friendly, with 9 more films being featured with English subtitles until Sunday, April 27. Among them will be “Wishing on a star“, a documentary feature by Peter Kerekes that premiered last year at Venice Film Festival, “Lady President”, Martin Šulík’s documentary about the first Slovak woman President Zuzana Čaputová, and “Waves”, the best Slovak film of the year 2024. This and more at Lumière Cinema in Bratislava, which is run by the Slovak Film Institute.

Sharpe 2025

Once the only showcase festival of Slovak, European, and other new music, Sharpe opens at the Nová Cvernovka culture hub in Bratislava on Thursday, April 24. Through Saturday, April 26, more than 50 gigs will perform brief concerts on 6 stages. The 11th festival will once again feature discussions, workshops, and music industry presentations, hosting international experts, acclaimed journalists, label managers and, of course, musicians. The Slovak artists line-up features Erik Šulc, Kub0, Katov Syn(th), and Transfare.

Spanish debut at Slovak Phil

After Easter, the Slovak Philharmonic continues with the concerts of symphonic duets. On Thursday and Friday, April 24 and 25, 2025, performing alongside this state-run institution will be two Spanish artists making their debut appearances this season - conductor Josep Vicent and pianist Martín García García. The programme will feature works by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Manuel de Falla, and Arturo Márquez.

Best Slovak experimental music of 2024 in Germany

On Saturday, April 26, Slovak saxophone player Michaela Turcerová, who is based in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, will perform a solo concert at the uncommercial ZAKK club in Bremen, Germany. Her album “Alene et” was awarded the best experimental music album of the year 2024 at the latest Radio_Head Awards, which was organized by public channel Rádio_FM. Earth Day with independent culture hubs

The European Union-sponsored initiative “EU Climate Pact” will celebrate Earth Day, April 22, in 4 Slovak towns. The main theme of 2025 is hope as an important element of climate activism and civil society. Discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and concerts will be part of the program run by independent culture hubs Záhrada in Banská Bystrica on April 24, Nádvorie and Malý Berlín in Trnava on April 25, Kasárne Kulturpark in Košice on April 26, and Komunitná záhrada Denného centra in Dolný Kubín on April 26 as well.
