Slovak Literature Centre head dismissed

Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová has dismissed the director of the Slovak Literary Centre, Pavol Sibyla, without providing a reason, the centre’s social media profile reported.

“The director of the centre, Pavol Sibyla, was handed a letter from the Minister of Culture dated 8 January, dismissing him from his post without any explanation,” the Slovak Literary Centre’s profile stated.

Sibyla is a Slovak publicist and writer. Over two decades, he has contributed to Slovak media, including six years as a reporter for the weekly Trend. Since his appointment in 2021, the number of Slovak authors translated into English increased. Thanks to Centre’s activities, 10 new translations of significant Slovak writers into English language will be released in 2025.

Before his media career, Sybila worked as a historian at the museum in Rimavská Sobota, later serving as the head of the Department of Internal Policy at the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic. For three years, he led the Stop Corruption Foundation. Sibyla has been the director of the Slovak Literary Centre since 2022.

On Thursday, the head of Slovak PEN Club, Gustav Murin was appointed the SLC acting director. The writer is known for his books about the Slovak mafia from the 1990s, but he is accused of spreading disinformation and hoaxes.
