Tony, Shelly and the magic light wins in Annecy

The Slovak animated feature film Tony, Shelly and the magic light has won one of the competition sections of the prestigious international festival of animated films in the French city of Annecy. The Contrechamp Jury Award was given to the story of a shining boy and a peculiar girl seeking light in the darkness. A Slovak-Czech-Hungarian co-production, this stop-motion animated film attracted the jury the most out of the 12 section entries. After the ceremony, producer Pavla Janoušková Kubečková informed that the negotiations about the distribution of the film in several countries are already happening. As she added, the local theatrical release is planned for December of this year.

Bratislava Puppet Theatre successful in Czech Republic

The International festival of professional puppet theaters Matka 23 in the Czech town of Liberec focused on production for pre-school children. The Five member jury awarded the best director and concept prize to Katarina Aulitisova from the Bratislava Puppet Theater. The play Okololo! is an interactive production with four actors guiding the audience through the laws of physics and endless imagination. The Visually attractive silent show challenges everything going round, rolling and circulating.

Biggest Slovak fountain working again

After 16 years, the biggest fountain in the territory of the Slovak Republic will be put to work again on Saturday, 24 June, in Bratislava. The iconic construction was renovated on all levels including the engine room, piping, pumps and surfaces as well as the popular lime blossom centerpiece as the symbol of friendship and peace among nations. The fountain which is 45 meters i diameter and 9 meters tall and 12 ton heavy statue of a lime blossom was built in 1979/1980. Its location, the freedom square, was also renovated. It will celebrate its resurrection with a program for families with children, guided tours with historians of architecture, a circus show as well as concerts and DJ sets. The event will conclude with a light show of the night fountain.

Significant interpreter of Slovak poetry dies

Actor Juraj Sarvas known for his radio voice died on Saturday, 17 June, 2023. He was recognised for his significant style of reading poetry by heart. For 35 years, Sarvas was a member of the Slovak National Theatre. His most popular film role has remained the main character of the film Forty-Four Mutineers about 44 Slovak soldiers in the Serbian town of Kragujevac assasinated due to their infantry regiment rebelion during the WWI. After finishing his acting career, Sarvas was a lecturer at the Academy of Arts in Banska Bystrica, central Slovakia. In the radio studio based in the same town, he was a devoted scriptwriter and presenter of radio programmes. Juraj Sarvas passed away aged 91.
