Viewer licence fees will be scrapped, with the main income of public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS) now set to be a claimable contribution from the state budget, TASR learnt on Friday. Parliament originally passed the change as part of an amendment to the law on a special construction tax in December. Subsequently, President Zuzana Caputova vetoed the amendment, but Parliament broke her veto and re-approved the bill on Friday. The claimable contribution from the state budget will be increased each year in line with the inflation rate, stated the amendment's authors. They viewed the collection of licence fees as being unfair and unethical, as it obliged people to contribute towards the public-service media regardless of whether or not they use their services.
Viewer licence fees should be scrapped as of July 1, 2023.
