The YMCA building's 100 years in Bratislava

The YMCA building's 100 years in Bratislava

The dark red brick building standing at the crossroads of Šancová and Karpatská streets, a 5 minute walk from the Bratislava main train station, looks like it is welcoming you with open arms. The story of the YMCA building started more than 100 years ago. It enjoyed its golden era in the Interwar period, followed by the arrival of the Nazis. It survived WWII only to become the property of the communist regime. And it looked out on the marching crowds during the Velvet revolution, which was to result in its interior being changed according to the liking of its new tenants without respecting its original architecture. In order to find out more about the building that has now become a national cultural monument, I decided to dive deep into its story all the way back to the very beginning of its existence.
