The biannual competition of illustrations of quality books for kids opened in the Slovak capital on 15th October. Named the Biennale of Illustration Bratislava, it has been considered a top class international competition for artistic non-commercial illustrations for the past 53 years. While there was the Hans Christian Andersen Award for the authors of books for children, there was none for illustrators in the 1960’s. And while the Bologna Book Fair started awarding illustrators in 1966 with the Ragazzi or Kid’s prize, the east block Bratislava biannual festival started doing so in 1967. A significant Italian critic Livio Sossi said that the way in which books for children were illustrated in socialist Czechoslovakia was something completely new to the west. In the pandemic year 2021, 42 countries managed to deliver originals to Slovakia and so out of 380 participating illustrators, the international jury agreed on 10 awardees and one grand prix winner. It is possible to see 2700 original illustrations displayed in the exhibition at Bratislava castle until 9th January 2022.
